According to the IEA, crude oil production peaked in 2006, at 70 million barrels a day, and would never return to that level; growth would come from natural gas liquids and unconventional oil.

Context: An economy whose energy is becoming more expensive to extract.

Data centers consumed about 415 TWh in 2024, 1.5% of the world’s electricity, up about 12% a year since 2017. The IEA expects more than a doubling, to around 945 TWh in 2030, slightly more than Japan’s current consumption; artificial intelligence is the main driver of this increase.

Context: Local power grids under strain where data centers are concentrated.

Selon RTE, l’été 2026 a coûté environ 10 TWh, contre 6 TWh en 2003.Rivers too warm or too low: reactors shut down or curtailed. On 23 June 2026, 2.2 GW of capacity lost, 3.5% of the installed fleet; in mid-July, three reactors offline (Golfech, Bugey, Chooz). According to EDF, these constraints have cost on average 0.3% of annual output since 2000, and could reach 1.4% around 2035 without adaptation. According to RTE, summer 2026 cost about 10 TWh, compared with 6 TWh in 2003.

Crise du détroit d’OrmuzStrait of Hormuz crisis

The war that began on 28 February 2026 in the Middle East closed the strait in practice: by mid-March, exports of crude oil and refined products passing through it fell below 10% of their pre-conflict level. An interim agreement between the United States and Iran in mid-June paved the way for a reopening; traffic is recovering, at 10.9 million barrels a day in the October 2026 report, but remains threatened by new attacks.

Context: The unavoidable route for Gulf oil and liquefied gas, which only Saudi Arabia and the Emirates can partly bypass by pipeline.
