Periodic warming of the equatorial Pacific, which disrupts rainfall and temperatures on several continents. Very strong episodes in 2015-2016 (+2.6 °C at the index peak) and 2023-2024 (+2.0 °C); in 2026, the index already reaches +2.2 °C in July-September. The IPCC considers it very likely that El Niño-related rainfall variability will increase in the second half of the century: this is a projection, not an observation.

Since June 2023, the number and size of ships limited for lack of water in Gatún Lake, after one of the driest years ever measured in Panama. According to World Weather Attribution, El Niño explains most of the rainfall deficit, made worse by growing water demand; the study cannot attribute this drying to warming.
